Borer continues to threaten Illinois ash trees

At this time of year, the Illinois Department of Agriculture is urging people to pay close attention to where their firewood comes from — and to buy firewood close to home. Knowing where the firewood originated can slow the spread of the emerald ash borer, a pest responsible for the deaths of millions of ash trees.

Virginia makes permanent ban on transporting walnut plants

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the quarantine area includes Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico and Powhatan counties and the cities of Colonial Heights and Richmond.

Va. expands ban on transporting walnut

Virginia has expanded a temporary ban on transporting walnut plants and plant parts after a disease that kills the trees was found outside the original quarantine area. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says Goochland, Hanover and Powhatan counties and the city of Colonial Heights are now part of the quarantine area.

Walnut wood from 11 states where thousand cankers disease has been found is now banned from Minnesota, says Don Davis of the Fargo Forum : Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson announced the quarantine to prevent the disease from entering Minnesota. It is caused by a fungus carried by the walnut twig beetle
